Bug Report for EGREEDY / GIFT in EGA Graphics Modes
! WARNING !
If you are running MicroSoft's Smartdrive (either the one from
MS-DOS or from Windows 3.x) and you use the Redraw command from
within Greedy or GIFT in EGA Graphics mode, or you choose to
make-up some days from the current month (which will also redraw
the screen after you make your choice) the main playing screen
files may become corrupt on disk. You'll know when this happens;
you'll see some wide, odd-colored bands of different colors
going across the screen. The game will still play ok, but the
extra colors may get annoying.
The four files inquestion for the GIFT program are:
GIFTSCN0.EGA
GIFTSCN1.EGA
GIFTSCN2.EGA
GIFTSCN3.EGA
For the EGA version of Greedy (EGREEDY.EXE), the four file are:
GRMAIN0.EGA
GRMAIN1.EGA
GRMAIN2.EGA
GRMAIN3.EGA
The only fix (until I find a way around this bug in Smartdrive &
QuickBasic) is to unzip the screen files from the original
GIFTxx.LZH file into the subdirectory where the other GIFT files are.
You'll have to do this every time the screens get corrupted. To
shorten this process, you may want to COPY these four files to
filenames with a .SAV extension, as in:
COPY *.EGA *.SAV
Then, if the screens get corrupted, issue the following DOS command:
COPY *.SAV *.EGA
Another solution is to disable the Smartdrive before you run
EGREEDY or GIFT, then re-enable it after you play. Consult your
DOS or Windows manual on how to work with Smartdrive.
Yet another solution (and NOT recommended by me) is to run EGREEDY
or GIFT under Windows. Unfortunately, this really slows the game
to a crawl, and GIFT may not work well at all.
Please bear with me until I find a way around this bug.
Thank you,
Bob Sewell
